Mapsafe.xyz is a tool that enables Sovereign Data Owners to perform geomasking, encryuption and notarisation of geospatial datasets. Using this approach promises complete data sovereignty. However, it is not a silver bullet for geoprivacy protection as other safeguards are necessary. The masking procedure requires several considerations, described on the MaskmyXYZ website. Although a digital signature of the encrypted geospatial dataset is notarised on the blockchain, the encrypted geospatial dataset itself needs to be kept safely. Moreover, the passphrase used for encryption, also needs to be kept securely. Therefore, Mapsafe is provided 'as is', without warranty of any kind, expressed or implied. The project uses an MIT license, which is described below.
The project was undertaken at the University of Auckland and was funded through the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (Ngā Rākau Taketake – Myrtle Rust and Kauri Dieback Research). We are grateful for the funding received for the development of this Data Sovereignty tool.
